Abstract
1. 1. The excretion of 17-keto steroids, 17-hydroxy steroids and total urinary estrogens of the woodchuck ( Marmota monax) were measured for a period of 1 year. 2. 2. The results of the analyses were compared to the overall activity of the animal and to the metabolism of lipid and protein. 3. 3. It is thought that the androgenic, glucocorticoid and estrogenic hormones are involved in the mechanism for arousal. 4. 4. The urinary epinephrine, norepinephrine and vanilmandelic acid excretion rates were followed in the woodchuck ( M. monax) for a period of 1 year. 5. 5. The lowest values were recorded in the early phases of hibernation with increases occurring just prior to arousal and on into the summer months. 6. 6. It is thought that the levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine assist in the preparation of the woodchuck for arousal.
