Abstract

Basing on contemporary literary sources, visual sources like miniatures, and the archaeological evidence, a chronological order of construction is tried to be established. There appears to have been, broadly speaking, three phases of construction: the pre-1570, 1571 to 1577, and then the post-1578 period. Amongst the initial constructions we have buildings like the Rang Mahal and the Masjid-i Sangtarashan. The Hathipol, the so-called Birbal’s Palace, and the so-called Jodhabai Palace belong to the second phase, while the courtyard of the Anuptalao, the daftarkhana, and the diwan-i am are probably from the third phase. The encompassing walls were still being built when Fathpur ceased to be the capital of the empire. The structures towards the lake are pre-Akbari.
