Abstract

As a biblical scholar, the author is of course not in a position to scrutinize his interpretation of the Buddhist material in any detail. However, this does not interfere with the task he addresses in this response, which is to enlarge the picture by shifting his attention to the concept of canon as developed in and applied to the biblical world. He tries to do this from a comparative perspective, taking into consideration some of the characteristics of the Buddhist notion of canon that were mentioned in Prof. Davidson's paper. Within the biblical world, he looks specifically at the Christian notion of canon. The comparative perspective has the positive potential to enhance his understanding of all the traditions considered in the comparison. Keywords:biblical world; Buddhist canons; Christian canon; Ronald M. Davidson
