Abstract
The number of one-child families has been increasing since the 1970s in China. This has been due to the promotion of family planning and the more strict birth policy which has become dominant in cities and in some rural areas. One of the consequences of the birth policy is the’four-two-one’ family structure (four grandparents, two parents, one child).
