Abstract
This is a brief presentation on the major differences between academic and private careers in emergency medicine (EM). We discuss the various types of practice environments and factors to consider when choosing a career path including time commitment, compensation, performance expectations, and ability to transition between practice environments. This presentation is intended to serve as a guide to a wide range of audiences, from EM residents considering a career in academic medicine, to faculty who provide mentoring and career counseling.
