AbstractThe chlorination of naphthalene in the vapour phase has been studied between 220° and 500° under the catalytic influence of small quantities of iodine. At 250° the reaction product contained α‐ and β‐chloronaphthalene in the ratio of 9:1; this ratio decreases rapidly as the reaction is carried out at a higher temperature. At 340° and above both isomers are produced in almost equal quantities. The course of the reaction is qualitatively the same as in the non‐catalytic bromination of naphthalene in the vapour phase.
