The Chinese Society of Anesthesiology: 2007 Annual Meeting Report

Abstract

The Chinese Society of Anesthesiology (CSA) 2007 Annual Meeting was held at the International Exhibition Center in Changsha, Hunan Province, September 6–9, 2007. More than 2300 participants attended in this excellent educational experience. Invited speakers included internationally renowned presenters from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, and China. There were 2400 abstracts and 280 invited oral presentations, including refresher courses, panels, and clinical case discussions presented during the meeting. A variety of anesthesia fields was covered, including clinical anesthesia, pain medicine, critical care medicine, and anesthesia education. The first session was a plenary session held in the Grand Hall. Professor Xinmin Wu, First Hospital of Beijing University, President of the CSA gave an address entitled “Thoughts on the Development of Chinese Anesthesiology.” He emphasized that great efforts should be made to push ahead with the development of Chinese anesthesiology and narrow the gap between China and western developed countries. Professor Anneke Meusing, the President of the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists, presented a lecture on “The Improvement of Perioperative Safety for Sick Children.” She proposed that the medical system is a very important component and should be upgraded to serve the patients better. A session of research by young anesthesiologists was held, for which the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) provided awards. There were more than 150 abstracts submitted to the standing committee of the CSA and 30 were selected for presentation. The selected 30 young anesthesiologists presented and defended their research work in English. This will help improve the presentation skills and English communication ability of young Chinese anesthesiologists. Ten senior specialists from the CSA standing committee reviewed and graded the presentations, the contents and skills of the contestants and awarded nine prizes to the presenters. Dr. Pingliang Yang, from Huaxi Hospital, Sichuan Province, won the first prize. Dr. Zhipeng Xu, from Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital Medical University, Dr. Hui Zhang, from Stomatology Hospital, Fourth Military Medical University, and Dr. Hao Wang, from Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, won the second prizes. Dr. Jiangang Song, from Eastern Hepatibilitay Hospital, Dr. Ruping Dai, from Second Xiangya Hospital, Zhongnan University, Dr. Yun Wang, from Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital Medical University, Dr. Xiaogao Jin, from Tongji Hospital, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Dr. Hongwei Zhao, from Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital Medical University, won the third prizes. All the winners were awarded IARS-sponsored research prizes and an IARS certificate. The meeting also provided opportunities to participate in other sessions with English lectures and presentations. Dr. Hamilton Shay, from Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, New York, USA, provided an update on “Anesthesia Management for Surgical Treatment of Cerebral Aneurysm.” Dr. Jiale Huang, from Taizhong Hospital in Taiwan, spoke on “The Influence of Tetramethylpyrazine on the Calcium Influx in Cultured Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells.” Professor Arthur Schulz, from Medizinisch Hochschule Hannover, Germany, discussed “The Depth of Anesthesia Monitoring.” Dr. Doris Cope, from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pittsburgh, USA, gave a report on “Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.” Dr. Tatsuru Arai, the Secretary General of Japan Society for Clinical Anesthesia, presented a lecture on “Current Topics in CPR methods.” Dr. Akira Asada, the President of Japan Society for Clinical Anesthesia, reported on “Comparative Clinical Pharmacology of Dexmedetomidine.” All these presentations fostered From the *Department of Anesthesiology, Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing 100020, China; and †Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, University of California, San Francisco, California.
