Abstract
Abstract This reply to Dr Henningsen evaluates claims concerning alleged similarities between early and modern bouts of witch mania. It is argued that the social meaning of witchcraft is different in both cases and that modern versions of witch mania do not appear to benefit any particular social class. Similarities between the evidence associated with the witch-hunters and other exponents of extraordinary belief systems are also noted.
