Abstract
A Particle in Cell (PIC) model of ion beam extraction from a plasma provides strong evidence that the origin of the observed V(3/2) relationship between the applied extraction voltage and beam current is caused by meniscus shape and collimation on the extraction electrode, not by space charge limited extraction. Excellent correlation between the PIC model, a gun code and experiment is shown for 100 µA Ar+ beams. The s-shape in the emittance phase space is shown to be caused by the radial electric field created by the external edge of the plasma electrode.
