Abstract

Summary Some of the problems involved in chemical studies with polonium (138.4 day 210Po) and the much less intensely radioactive protactinium (32,600 yr. 231Pa) are discussed and the handling of these two α-active isotopes is briefly described. The chemistry of polonium and protactinium, particularly the halides and nitrates, is reviewed in the light of their positions in the Periodic Table.
