Abstract

SummaryThe chemical polishing of aluminium in phosphoric-sulphuric-nitric acid mixtures with controlled additions of copper was studied by electron microscopy. Changes in specular reflectivity were correlated with aluminium dissolution rates and the surface structure which changed through an etching stage to a polishing stage and then to a coarsening stage. The results furthered discussion of chemical polishing mechanisms.
