Abstract
SUMMARY: Purified cell walls were isolated from hyphae of Penicillium digitatum Sacc. and P. italicum Whem. Electron micrographs showed microfibrils in the walls. The walls are composed chiefly of carbohydrate material, mainly D-glucose, together with D-galactose, glucosamine and mannose. Only small amounts of protein were found. Fractionation with alkali and acid indicated that the walls contain several glycans.
