Abstract

A study was undertaken of the pre-infection factors in root-knot nematode resistant tomato cultivars. Roots of tolerant, resistant, immune and susceptible tomato cultivars were analysed for dry matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, phenolics and amino acids. Results of these analyses showed that tolerant, resistant and immune tomato cultivars contained more dry matter than did susceptible cultivars. Phosphorus content was greater in susceptible cultivars. Number and kinds of free and bound amino acids were the same in resistant and susceptible cultivars. Phenolic content was found to be directly related to root-knot nematode resistance, being highest in immune cultivars and species, followed by resistant, tolerant and susceptible cultivars.
