Abstract

The monophagy of the larvae of the catalpa sphinx on leaves of several species of the catalpa tree has been confirmed. A mixture of catalposides has been isolated from leaves of Catalpa bignonioides , and their chemical properties found identical with those described in the literature. These catalposides elicited a strong feeding response when tested in an agar diet. The activity was lost after acid hydrolysis. It is suggested that the presence of catalposides in the catalpa tree is responsible for the monophagous habit of this insect.
