Abstract

Various breed characteristics including size, conformation, colour, habitat, fibre production and reproduction pertaining to Cheghu goats are described. The body weights at birth, 1 and 3 years were 2.1, 16.6 and 39.9 kg for males and 2.0, 14.5 and 27.8 kg for females, respectively. Body length, height at withers and chest girth at birth, 1 and 3 years were 28.5, 28.9 and 31.5 cm, 54.4, 50.6 and 64.5 cm, 72.9, 66.2 and 84.7 cm for males and 28.4, 28.9 and 31.5 cm, 53.0, 48.5 and 57.0 cm and 65.5, 58.1 and 73.9 cm for females. In the age groups of 0–1, 1–2, 2–3 and above 3 years pashmina (cashmere) yields averaged 62.3, 98.9, 192.9 and 168.6 g in males and 64.0, 100.1, 118.7 and 125.4 g in females, fibre length 5.0, 5.8, 7.7 and 7.0 cm in males and 4.9, 6.0, 5.8 and 5.8 cm in females, and fibre diameter 11.3, 12.0, 12.0 and 12.8 μm in males and 11.7, 11.9, 12.0 and 12.0 μg in females.
