Abstract
Abstract A modified Beta distribution has been developed to characterize the particle size distribution from an oil-fired boiler. The properties of the distribution are discussed and illustrated with applications to a filter and a cyclone. Experimental measurements of the particle size distribution were obtained with a seven stage Andersen-inertial impactor. Experimental measurements were carried out during soot blowing and for non-isokinetic sampling as well as for isokinetic sampling. The Beta distribution along with a numerical analogue of the impactor was used to characterize the data. In comparison with the log-normal distribution, the Beta distribution more closely described the experiments. The standard deviation of the Beta distribution did not vary for the experimental conditions.
