Abstract

Laser desorption Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (LD-FTICR-MS) with potassium cationization is a valuable technique for the characterization of a variety of industrial materials. Commercial products can be analyzed, with minimal sample preparation, in under twenty minutes. Poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether styrene oligomers and tetrafluoroethylene-ethylene oxide copolymers are characterized by LD-FTICR-MS. Molecular weight and chemical composition distribution data are provided. Limitations of the technique are also explored. Virgin and modified natural oils are well characterized by LD-FTICR-MS. The degree of chemical modification is easily measured. Higher resolving powers allow identification of constituents of the oils.
