Abstract
Estimates have been made of the uniformity of the spatial characteristics of type 1P21 photomultiplier tubes and their variation with wavelength. It has been found that these tubes have remarkably uniform characteristics (of the order of 0.5%) and that the area of maximum sensitivity of the photocathode can be repeatedly located to a similar order of accuracy. It is suggested that the errors demonstrated by Edels and Gambling are due to their experimental method rather than a true representation of the spatial characteristics of the photocathode. Linearity of the photomultiplier input/output characteristics has been measured for the range 2 - 0.05 μA and no departures from linearity can be detected within the experimental accuracy (0.5%).
