Abstract
This paper describes the use of a high-performance liquid chromatographic system to produce complex chromatograms of acid/neutral impurities from illicit heroin samples. The system uses a Hypersil 5 ODS column and methanol:water: THF(60:35:5)eluent. Ultraviolet and fluorescence detectors were suitable, the latter having slight advantages. The chromatographic time required for elution was less than 10 minutes. The major impurities so identified are acetylthebaol and thebaol. Other compounds have been tentatively identified as phenanthrene derivatives. A case example is given.
