Abstract
Many of the contributions in this volume bear witness to the fact that the Antarctic system has undergone a dramatic development since the Treaty and SCAR came into being some thirty years ago. Science has been at the forefront in this process. However, during the course of time Antarctic science has changed and so has its role and relations to other parts of the Antarctic system. Environmental protection, resource management and tourism have emerged as important issues on the agenda. These “new” activities are related to scientific research in many ways. There has been a development towards greater complexity, diversity and increased global salience.KeywordsScientific ActivityAntarctic ResearchPolar ScienceInternational Geophysical YearDramatic DevelopmentThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
