Abstract
The metamorphosis of the U.S. national photovoltaic program structure, balance, and technology development emphasis is accelerating as photovoltaic technology and industry adjust to the challenges of the mid-1990's and address the present and future opportunities. This is a very positive sign of the vibrant future being shaped for photovoltaic technology applications as U.S. industry continues to improve its products, reduce production costs, expand production, develop new products and markets, and climb toward the market summit at an ever-increasing pace. Descriptions of a number of the new phases in the photovoltaic program activities of the 1990's are presented along with a brief summary of their current status. Also, some recent advances in performance of photovoltaic materials, cells, and modules will be presented.
