Abstract

The Colorado Interdisciplinary Core Academy for Middle Level Teachers was designed to assist teachers in the development and implementation of inter disciplinary curriculum units in middle school classrooms. The academy provided teachers with experiences in teaming, the development of interdisciplinary units, teaching strategies, and appropriate assess ment tools for interdisciplinary teaching. Schools selected to participate in the project included different cultural and geographic areas of the state and students represented a variety of backgrounds. Among the main goals of this project were to provide teachers and supervisors with the experience of developing core acad emic knowledge, teaching strategies, and curricula, in an environment conducive to sharing ideas, developing teaching skills, and implementing these skills with middle school students of various backgrounds. Furthermore, the project was to educate master teachers and supervisors to become middle school curriculum developers. The educational program for the 165 teachers and 20 administrators participating in the academy consisted of three graduate courses which dealt with the aspects of designing and implementing interdiscipli nary curriculum at the middle school level.
