Abstract

Plasma nitriding is widely used in many technical applications as a final operation to improve the mechanical and surface properties of steel. Recently, many studies have been investigated combination of plasma nitriding and other surface treatments. This work is focused in study of structural and mechanical properties of 42CrMo4 steel, which was treated by the technologies of plasma nitriding, tenifer and combined with others surface treatment technologies used in the weapon industry: manganese phosphate and blackening. Plasma nitriding was carried out under different nitriding gas mixture at 500ºC for 10h. The results of GDOES layer composition profile, microhardness (HV 0.05), surface hardness measurement and microstructure evaluation were supplemented by the parameters of surface texture. The experiment showed that the change of structure resp. parameters of layer and surface texture after thermochemical treatment depends not only on type of treatment but also on the substrate.
