Abstract

As breast imaging technology advances, many facilities are making a significant investment to upgrade existing film-based analog mammography units to digital imaging systems. Many freestanding imaging centers and satellite clinics limit breast imaging services to basic screening and follow-up exams, while other institutions provide services ranging from screening exams to cancer treatment and ongoing care. Regardless of the scope of services, healthcare providers need to evaluate current imaging technologies, workflow processes, and methods of data management so they can develop a plan to address the challenges created by the transition to digital breast imaging. Failure to address these challenges may potentially impact the provider’s ability to perform important clinical services, preserve crucial clinical data, and ultimately ensure delivery of quality patient care.
