Abstract

The growing ageing population poses many challenges for society and health services because advancing age is associated with the increasing incidence of health problems and growing costs of meeting health needs. Old age is associated with a high prevalence of dementia. According to the Alzheimer’s Society (2009) there are 700 000 people with dementia in the UK of whom two thirds are women and one third are over 95 years of age. While 64% of those living in care homes have a form of dementia, two thirds with dementia live in the community while one third live in care homes (Alzheimer’s Society, 2009).
