Abstract

AbstractThis chapter outlines the taxonomic classification of medically important cestodes, and describes the morphology, life cycle, local names and geographical distribution of Diphyllobothrium latum, Spirometra, Taenia saginata, T. solium, T. multiceps, Echinococcus granulosus, E. multilocularis, E. oligarthrus, E. vogeli, Hymenolepis nana, H. diminuta, Dipylidium caninum and very occasional human tapeworms (Bertiella studeri, Inermicapsifer madagascariensis, Mathevotaenia symmetrica, Mesocestoides lineatus and Raillietina) spp. The clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, location in host, diagnosis, treatment (drug therapy, surgery), epidemiology, prevention and control, and zoonotic aspects of the infections caused by these organisms are reviewed. The immunology of tapeworm infections and the possibilities for vaccines are discussed.
