Abstract
In the earliest decades of Qumran scholarship, the scholarly reconstructions of the history and identity of the Qumran community were largely based on the documents found in Cave 1 and the Damascus Document. The importance and centrality of the Temple in 4QMMT is illuminated by an analysis of the structure and contents of 4QMMT, both of which imply a grave concern for the purity of the Temple cult. One of the most important indicators of the centrality of the Temple is the use of the Deuteronomic maqom -formula in the legal section of 4QMMT. The author(s)/redactor(s) of 4QMMT are using Deuteronomic language to convince the audience to accept the fact that the cult of Jerusalem needs to be reformed in order to restore the purity of the Temple and to protect the covenantal relationship with God.
