Abstract

SummaryThe cathodo-luminescence of minerals in thin sections of rocks has been examined with the aid of an electron-probe microanalyser and also with a simple electron source producing an unfocused beam. Experimental details of the technique are briefly described and colour photographs, taken at a primary magnification of 30 times, are included. The observed variations in colour and intensity of luminescence are interpreted in the light of electron-probe and spectrochemical determinations of trace elements. Applications of the technique are discussed.
