Abstract

Provisional USP Corticotropin (porcine ACTH) is inactivated by dog blood, plasma, and serum at 37° C in 3– 4 hours. This ACTH is stable in 0.9% sodium chloride over a temperature range of 20–37° C and a pH range of 2–7 for at least 5–6 hours. It is also generally stable in 0.9% sodium chloride for at least one hour at 100° C at a pH of 1–2 but some experiments suggested slight reduction of activity under these conditions. Endogenous ACTH activity in human plasma is destroyed at 37° C but appears to be stable for at least 5–6 months in the frozen state.
