Abstract

AbstractThis chapter discusses the effectiveness of agricultural training and farmer-to-farmer extension (F2FE) on rice cultivation technologies and productivity in irrigated and rain-fed rice-growing areas. For this purpose, the chapter describes the empirical results of two studies conducted in Tanzania. The first study examines management training for the Modified System of Rice Intensification (MSRI) by assessing its impacts on technology adoption and rice farming productivity in a rain-fed area. The second study focuses on the effectiveness of F2FE training in an irrigated area. For both studies, we consistently find positive impacts of training on technology adoption and productivity of participating farmers. We also observe spillover effects from participants on non-participants in irrigated areas.
