Abstract

ABSTRACT An emphasis upon parameters in lower division mathematics courses can be a means for helping students to develop habits of analytical thinking. This article draws examples from the precalculus and calculus contexts, as well as from elementary physics. Discussion of a study conducted with first-level calculus students provides evidence of deficiencies in the understanding and use of parameters.
