Abstract

The Kolyma-Omolon region in the northeastern USSR has been interpreted by several western geologists as having formed the core of a discrete continental plate—the “Kolyma plate”—and has been used as such in pre-Jurassic continental reconstructions. The region has also been considered as part of the pre-Jurassic North American plate and by some Soviet geologists as part of the Siberian plate. However, the available geological evidence suggests either that most of the region was part of the Siberian Platform since at least the Ordovician period or that it is a mosaic of accreted terranes.
