Abstract

The Care Quality Commission's state of health and adult social care in England report found that general practices maintained good quality care from last year. Understanding what the report found is essential for nurses in order to continue this trend in their practice The Care Quality Commission's state of care 2017/18 report reviews the performance of more than 31 000 healthcare providers, 22% of which are GP services. Despite the range of difficulties experienced by the sector, the regulator found that good quality care has broadly been maintained, and, in some cases, improved. GP services were found to have the highest overall proportion of ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ services (96%) of the four professional groups reviewed. The report explored various factors that the sustainability of good quality care depends on. These range from access to care, quality management, capacity and commissioning to workforce management, recruitment and retention. The regulator is clear that the performance of individual providers must be supplemented by successful collaboration, enabling providers to work together to provide joined-up care for service users.
