Abstract

Yolk platelets (YP) from blastulae and gastrulae of Xenopus laevis contain the neutral hexoses glucose and mannose at 12–42 μg/mg protein and amino sugar at 2.6–3.8 μg/mg protein. Carbohydrate is present in lipovitellin 1 and lipovitellin 2 and glycolipid was found. Little or no sialic acid, galactose, fucose, or glycosaminoglycan (GAG) was found. The results are discussed in terms of possible functions of these complex carbohydrates. The saccharide moiety of one or more of the glycoproteins may promote uptake of vitellogenin by the developing oöcyte; glycolipids may be ready made components for membrane biogenesis during embryogenesis.
