Abstract

Commander Eugene F. McDonald, Jr., the powerful and flamboyant founder of Zenith Radio Corporation, had a profound influence on the fledgling radio industry. He founded the National Association of Broadcasters, broke the broadcast monopoly, and was responsible for Zenith shortwave radio being the first to be used in the high Arctic. His embrace of the new profession of industrial design led him to a relationship with one of industrial design's founders, Robert Davol Budlong, whose skills, coupled with McDonald's quest for quality, resulted in 25 years of truly noteworthy Zenith radio products. The authors have used details from the private unpublished papers of Budlong and McDonald, as well as contemporary accounts, to tell the story of these two pioneers.
