Abstract
The paper is devoted to the problem of hard metal multilayer coating fabrication on steel substrate. Two powder blends WC/Co and TiC/Co were used for the sequential forming of laminated coating by EPD method. It was shown that after vacuum sintering the sample coating consists of two layers. However microstructural investigation revealed strong chemical interaction between components of the layers and the substrate. It was stated that tungsten carbide of the top layer almost completely dissolves in iron-rich binder with (Fe, Co)3W3C – Fe eutectic formation. The presence of TiC/Co interlayer results in additional decarbonized layer formation in the steel substrate. The microhardness values of the top and the bottom coating layers are ≈ 500 HV and 800 HV correspondingly, although the substrate and decarbonized layer ones are ≈ 200 HV and 400 HV correspondingly.
