Abstract

Detections of TeV gamma‐rays from the Crab Nebula by the Whipple group have shown the effectiveness of the Čerenko imaging technique in discriminating against the cosmic ray background. ‘‘Stereoscopic’ observations of atmospheric Čerenkov emission from air showers, using two telescopes separated by ∼100 m, are expected to increase the sensitivity of this technique. The CANGAROO project, a collaboration between the University of Adelaide and a number of Japanese institutions, will employ both of these techniques for observations from Woomera, Australia.
