Abstract

A national registry for assisted conception by in vitro fertilization (IVF) and gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) was established in Canada in December 1988 and has been in operation since that date. Between 1989 and 1992, data on 14,545 IVF and GIFT/zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT) attempts were collected from 16 centres which represented 99 percent of all Canadian activity. In this registry, a summary form is completed for each calendar year for all attempts in each centre. The form is one that is internationally used and accepted. This article presents results from the Canadian centres and compares them to world statistics from other registries in 55 countries. Data are also presented on the relationship between pregnancy occurrence and some couple or treatment characteristics.
