Abstract

Introduction: Physical Fitness is an essential component of military operational performance. Given societal trends in physical activity and obesity, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) must maintain pressure to strengthen our culture of fitness. It is clear that simply having staffed fitness facilities is not sufficient to address this issue – we must strive to understand and address the policy, social and built environment influences on health behaviours. Furthermore, the impact of sleep, nutrition and injury prevention on physical performance must be acknowledged and addressed. In 2016 the Chief of the Defence Staff of the CAF signed a Strategic Initiating Directive, laying the groundwork for Military Personnel Command to develop and implement a more focused Physical Performance Strategy aiming to maintain the operational effectiveness of the CAF and the welfare of its members.
