Abstract
Abstract We calculate the cross section for the Callan-Rubakov effect using a classical approach. The equations of motion of a charged particle with spin in the field of a Dirac monopole are solved and a cross section for the capture process is calculated. A similar calculation is performed for superconducting cosmic strings. In this case the cross section is seen to have a leading order dependence on the string width and a long-range energy barrier is found.
