Abstract

Maritime training, research, and education have played a decisive role in shaping the modern maritime culture in the UK. The developement pattern is discussed followed by an evaluation of the nature of the ‘knowledge industry’ as it currently exists with reference to learning, courses, teaching, research, institutions, and the advent of information technology. Finally, the tradition, policy, and strategic planning issues are considered.
