Abstract

The California Division of Mines and Geology gravity program includes several local and regional surveys, the compilation of data for the preparation of gravity maps of the state, and the establishment of a statewide network of base stations. The regional surveys, which either are related to geologic mapping programs or are studies of particular mineral commodities, include projects in the following five areas:1. The Ione basin area in western Amador and Sacramento counties in the Sierra Nevada foothill belt. This survey is related to a study of commercial deposits of clay, sand, and lignite.2. The Clear Lake‐Geysers area, in Lake, Mendocino, and Sonoma counties, north of San Francisco. This survey is a part of a study of Quaternary structures, volcanism, and occurrences of natural steam in the northern Coast Ranges.3. Bridgeport Valley and Bodie Hills, including the Bodie and Masonic mining districts, in Mono County, north of Mono Lake.4. The Shoshone‐Tecopa area in Inyo and San Bernardino counties. This survey is a study of basin and range structures in this part of the Mojave Desert.5. The south San Francisco Bay area. This is a cooperative study of subsurface structure conducted for the California Department of Water Resources.
