Abstract

An International Theatre, Dance, and Martial Arts Seminar and Festival was held in Calcutta, India, 14-20 December 1987. Delegates from twenty-nine countries attended the event, sponsored by Padatik, the West Bengal center of the Bharatiya Natya Sangh, the Indian Center of the International Theatre Institute. In addition to Indian performances from Manipur, Orissa, Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, performances of Beijing opera, no, and three Indonesian forms-pancak silat (martial art), randai (martial art-influenced folk drama), and contemporary-were featured. While the seminars brought together an interdisciplinary and intercultural group of scholars who presented papers on a variety of topics, the festival featured demonstrations and performances of martial arts as well as traditional and contemporary performances closely related to the martial arts. The program planning committee consisted of Suresh Awasthi, Sunil Kothari, Shyamanand Jalan, Kaushik Dutta Sharma, Carol Martin, and Phillip Zarrilli. The week-long schedule was arranged to include morning seminars and lecture demonstrations on specific martial arts and related performance traditions, afternoon participatory workshops in martial art techniques and video and film lectures on special topics, and evening performances. When possible, an Asian martial art was demonstrated on the same program with the performance in which it was employed.
