Abstract
The welding stresses in a free plate are determined theoretically by treating the problem as one of two-dimensional elastoplastic thermal stress analysis. The governing equation of the problem is solved using a finite difference technique and plasticity effects are allowed for using the method of successive elastic solutions. The relationship between the weld shrinkage force and the heat input is studied and the effect of coincident two-pass welds is examined.
