Abstract

Equations are derived for the potentials developed across heteroionic junctions of uniform ionic strength formed by any two strong uni-univalent electrolyte solutions with a common ion. Account is taken not only of the normal Henderson term but also, by means of Harned's rule, of the contribution made by activity coefficients. The effect of the latter is roughly proportional to the ionic strength and is of the order of a few tenths of a millivolt at 0·1 N. Various simple and mixture junctions are examined in detail, as well as Owen cells incorporating two mixture junctions.
