Abstract

This paper considers the calculation of the force on a mineral particle in a magnetic field, a matter of relevance to wet and dry magnetic separators. The literature of physics rarely addresses this problem, magnetic theory concentrating more on waves. The metallurgical literature has many reviews of the performance of magnetic separators but force calculations are few and generally are carried out and discussed in terms of electromagnetic units. With the adoption of SI units it is important to address the force calculation problem again and the conversion of such problems from one system to another necessitates an understanding of the grounds of each system, that is the problem is more complicated than simple conversion factors would allow. Numerical examples are displayed.
