Abstract

The shift and the width of the calcium-atom resonant line produced by the proximity of a graphite surface are calculated as a function of atom-surface distance. The results indicate that the commonly suggested model of calcium atoms in association with interstellar graphite grains is unlikely to be the cause of the unidentified interstellar absorption line at 4430 Å.
