Abstract

ABSTRACT This study explored dynamics that would be beneficial to the counseling community in understanding gamers as a unique culture. In addition to descriptive variables that served the purpose of better understanding the culture and controlling for any extraneous influences, the focus was on gamer personality and motivation, coping strategies and resiliency. The potential relationship between gamer personality types and coping strategies were explored through comparisons of personality type and resiliency variables, along with an assessment of whether a person’s preferred coping methods mediated any relationship between personality and resiliency. Except for a moderate negative relationship between engagement style coping and resiliency, there was no significant relationship between personality type, coping strategy, and resiliency. However, as an exploratory study, interesting findings related to demographic variables were uncovered.
