THE following paragraph is found in the scholarly work of O. H. Perry Pepper1: The Caduceus used as the symbol of the medical profession in America, was the staff of Mercury, the Roman god of trade and messenger of the gods.... The staff of Mercury has two serpents twined about it; more suitable for the medical profession would be the staff of Aesculapius, the Roman god of medicine. Many of the medical profession will agree with him, especially when they recall some of the other attributes assigned to the messenger god. He is the god of elegance, of skill . . .
