Abstract

The land cral), Cardisoma guanhumi (Latreille), is distributed throughout the islands of the Caribbean and also occurs along the coastal waterways in Central and South America. In the United States it is limited to the Gulf Coast. The land crab is particularly in evidence in southern Florida because of its great numbers, its s1)ectacular summer migrations, and its large burrows in the ground. By meanis of its burrowing habit, C. guanhumi has been able to penetrate some distance inland away from surface water. This study3 describes the burrows and their importance to the land crabs in southern Florida.
